Supporting the growth of a new tree is an exciting adventure that requires time and care. Depending on the type of tree you have, it can take 1-2 years for it to become fully established. Properly attending to your new tree ensures that it will live a long, healthy life.
Here are our top three tree care tips for a healthy sapling:
- Watering – Water is critical for all living things and newly planted trees are no exception. A good rule of thumb to follow is watering 2-3 times a week so that the root ball stays moist. If you aren’t sure if your tree needs water or not, digging out a little dirt from around the roots can help you to be aware of the current soil conditions. If the soil feels dry, it’s likely time to add some water.
- Pruning – In the early stages of life, young trees are very delicate. It’s best to avoid any heavy pruning or trimming during the first year, as this can add stress to your sapling. Any dead or broken branches should be removed, but it’s wise to avoid any further cutbacks.
- Mulching – Creating a ring of mulch around your tree’s base is a great way to insulate its soil while protecting the tree’s roots. However, too much of anything can cause more harm than good. Over-mulching can suffocate your tree’s roots, which is why we recommend keeping the layer of mulch between 2-4 inches deep.
