If you buy a house with a large tree on the property or if you own a commercial property that is lined with trees, you may take them for granted. However, ensuring they stay healthy and avoid diseases starts with proper tree care. Knowing the types of trees on your property will help you maintain their health and prolong their life. These general tips will help you get started on proper tree care.

Four Tips for Proper Tree Care

1. Water Properly – The trees on your property need to be watered, just like any plant. A good way to check if your trees need a drink is to dig into the soil about an inch and see how moist it is. Older trees can get by with an inch of water a week, whereas newer younger trees may need a few gallons a week.
2. Mulch – Mulch around the base of your tree to help protect and insulate the roots. Exposed roots can be hurt by lawnmowers, which is why it is a good idea to cover them in 2-4 inches of mulch. Mulch will also absorb more water and help to prevent dry soil.
3. Fertilize – Much like any plant in your garden, trees need fertilizer to help them grow. One way to fertilize them is to apply a slow-release fertilizer that will release nutrients into the soil. An easier way to fertilize your trees is to leave grass clippings and leaves on your lawn and around your tree. Grass clippings work as a natural fertilizer and release nutrients into the soil on their own.
4. Consult an Arborist – The best tip for proper tree care is to consult your local arborist or tree company. They will be able to inspect your trees’ health, offer advice, and let you know what your specific trees need.
